Living in the Rock

Posted on: November 20, 2010

This home’s design was inspired by the Italian hill towns where they would build on the rocky hills to preserve the fertile land for farming. It is partly carved into one of the outcropping piece of bedrock on some of the 15 acres. Click through to see this vacation home in all it’s glory.

Located in the San Juan Islands, the home was designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects of Seattle. They are a Seattle architecture firm who have won numerous awards over the years including most recently the 2009 AIA Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects.

The firms design principals are: buildings can serve as a bridge between nature and culture, and inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. Both are seen in this fine example of modern architecture.
